| The Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) is operated by Stanford University for the Department of Energy, Office of Science. The centers main instrument for support of research is a two-mile-long linear electron accelerator that can produce intense beams of electrons and positrons with energies up to 50 billion electron volts (GeV). SLAC facilities include the accelerator for producing the high-energy particle beams, two electron-positron colliding beam storage rings, and a complement of large experimental detection devices used in particle physics experiments, including a bubble chamber and several magnetic spectrometers. SLAC is located on a 426 acre site approximately 50 miles south of San Francisco, California. |
